Rhythmic Gymnasts at the Grand Prix in Marbella
Another exciting stage of the prestigious Grand Prix international rhythmic gymnastics series took place in the sunny city of Marbella. As always, the event was held in a warm and vibrant atmosphere, greatly enhanced by the passionate support of the audience.
Among the standout participants were Paris Olympic bronze medalist Sofia Raffaeli (Italy), all-around finalist Taisiya Onofriychuk (Ukraine), Alba Bautista (Spain), Evita Griskenas (USA), and Takhmina Ikromova (Uzbekistan).
After a thrilling competition, Taisiya Onofriychuk (Ukraine) claimed a well-deserved victory in the all-around with a total score of 116.1. Sofia Raffaeli (Italy) secured second place with 115.0, followed by Takhmina Ikromova (Uzbekistan) in third with 111.65 points.
Unfortunately, Spanish favorite Alba Bautista was forced to withdraw after the second round due to injury. The audience responded with heartfelt applause, and during the finals, a long line of young gymnasts formed to receive her autograph – a touching sign of admiration and support.
The tournament’s outstanding organization is largely thanks to Angelo Madronal Folpini, President of the Andalusian Gymnastics Federation. Through his dedicated efforts, many local clubs now have the opportunity to learn from the best gymnasts in the world – a major contribution to the growing popularity of rhythmic gymnastics in Spain.
One of the international guests was Austrian sports agent Stepan Lendyel, who attended the tournament on behalf of the Austrian Gymnastics Federation (ÖFT). His goal was to analyze the event format in view of potentially organizing similar international competitions in Austria. Mr. Lendyel held key meetings, including with Blanka Mlenkova, President of the Grand Prix Committee, and Jose De Freitas, Secretary General of the series.
During the tournament, Mr. Lendyel gained comprehensive insight into the organizational processes and engaged in constructive discussions regarding potential future cooperation. It is also worth noting that, thanks to the previous efforts of Heide Bruneder, one of the Grand Prix series’ co-founders, Austria already hosted a Grand Prix tournament in Innsbruck from November 14–16, 2014.
Upon his return, Mr. Lendyel reported on the international meetings to Mag. Robert Labner, Secretary General of the Austrian Gymnastics Federation. A working meeting is scheduled soon with Dr. Gabriela Jahn, President of the Austrian Federation (member of the Executive Committee of the Austrian Olympic Committee and the Elite Sports Committee of Sport Austria), to explore the possibilities of hosting future FIG competitions in Austria.
